In 2007, Octopus was commissioned to develop and implement the core back-office component of a multi-purpose contactless smart card system in Dubai.
The unified ticketing scheme, called the “nol”, is a common payment platform for public transport services including the metro, trams, buses, waterbuses, ferries and parking.
Octopus provides to the operator a back-office system implemented based on a state-of-the-art central clearing house system, in addition to sharing Octopus’ world-renowned expertise in the operation of public transport e-ticketing systems.
The system has processed more than 8.5 billion transactions. More than 97 million nol stored-value tickets and cards have been issued.
