Which Octopus reader should I use for retail payment?
If you have a POS system at your cashier counter, you could use either a New Retail Reader (POS Integrated), a Mini-Multipurpose Octopus Processor or an Octopus Processor with Buzzer Module. Please note that your POS system must be equipped with T-bar screen if you use the latter.
If you do not have a POS system, you could use a New Retail Reader (Standalone) or a Portable Octopus Processor. A broadband line, telephone line or mobile network is required for transferring Octopus usage data.

When will I receive payment on Octopus usage transactions?
Octopus merchants are now free to choose any one of the following to suit specific settlement needs:
Settlement Period
Type of Receiving Banks | Bank Settlement Fee | Settlement Period | |
---|---|---|---|
Option 1 | Designated banks, including BOCHK, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Hang Seng and Citibank | Free | Allow T+1 business day, upon successful uploading of the transaction data to OCL, for OCL to make payment instructions to the paying bank for transferring funds to the service provider’s receiving bank. |
Option 2 | Non-designated banks (via autopay) | $1 per settlement | Allow T+1 business day, upon successful uploading of the transaction data to OCL, for OCL to make payment instructions to the paying bank for transferring funds to the service provider’s receiving bank via a utopay. The time of receipt by the receiving bank and the availability of funds will depend on the fund depositing arrangement between the paying bank and the receiving bank. In general, it will take 1-2 more business days for funds to be received and available than when using CHATS. |
Option 3 | Non-designated banks (via CHATS) |
$30 per settlement | Allow T+1 business day, upon successful uploading of the transaction data to OCL, for OCL to make payment instructions to the paying bank for transferring funds to the service provider’s receiving bank via CHATS. |
