Octopus STEM x SPORTS Scheme
Nurturing Children in Need
Co-organised by OCL and St. James' Settlement in 2007, the “Octopus Kids' Nurturing (OKN) Programme” subsidises grassroots primary students to participate in extra-curricular classes, thus fostering their whole-person development and social skills. These activities include music, dance, arts, sports classes, fun day camps, workshops on green living and financial management and theme park visits.
In 2019, OKN entered a new phase as“Octopus Talent Nurturing Programme”, with an expanded focus to include STEM education and sustainability elements to promote building a smart city. The Programme also expanded its scope of beneficiaries to include both primary and secondary students.
Since 2007, more than 4,300 grassroots students from 190 schools have been benefited from the Programme with various opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities.
Cultivating New Talents in Innovation and Technology
Accorded with the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong and to encourage participation in physical activities among primary and secondary students, the Programme is elevated to a new level as “Octopus STEM x SPORTS Scheme” in 2022, with matching sponsorship from the Social Welfare Department’s Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged.
The first three years of the Scheme will be implemented in the 2022-2025 school years with a total of 30 schools participating, benefiting about 720 students. The Scheme offers students sports activities, training courses, workshops, fun day camps, etc., which combine STEM and sports, to achieve the goals of enhancing students’ interests in sports, innovation and technology and enabling them to cultivate creativity, problem-solving skills, critical thinking and team spirit throughout the learning process.
